Slate Belt Regional
Community Emergency
Response Team
Attention Slate Belt citizens: The Slate Belt
Council of Governments (COG) is organizing a regional CERT
team to help serve the area in the event of a major
emergency or disaster. CERT, a government sanctioned
program, trains able citizens in basic emergency response
skills such as light search and rescue, fire suppression,
basic first-aid, traffic control, and other basic emergency
skills. Once trained, each CERT member is provided with
basic emergency equipment and may be called upon to assist
existing emergency personnel in the event of a large
emergency or disaster. In the past, CERT teams in other
parts of the country have aided emergency personnel in
floods, hurricanes, wildfires, terrorist attacks, building
collapses, traffic accidents, missing person cases, and
other emergencies. By becoming a certified CERT member, you
give emergency services in your area a vital extra option to
call upon in extraordinary circumstances. In addition,
you will become better prepared to aid your loved ones,
neighbors, or fellow workers and citizens in the event of an
emergency where professional emergency assistance is not
immediately available.

Dear Homeowner and/or renter,
It is important to make sure that your family and your home
are as safe as they can be. There are several opportunities
in the Slate Belt that you may be unaware of that can help
you achieve a safer home and can help you prepare for
emergency situations. The purpose of this letter is to
inform you about the different options available to you.
We are proposing a new program that we hope the Commonwealth
of Pennsylvania will fund. This program proposes to provide
financial assistance to homeowners to help improve the
safety problems in their homes. When our application is
approved, homeowners in targeted areas may apply for
assistance, whether you are a first time homeowner or have
owned your home for years. For more information, please
contact the Slate Belt Council of Governments at (phone or
fax) (610) 863-1726 or email
slatebeltcog@entermail.net or go to our
internet web site at
www.slatebeltcog.org.
We are also attempting to schedule a home improvement
training workshop for a low cost for families in the area.
This workshop would be run by a certified building inspector
and would include instruction in basic household
improvements, such as fixing the wiring in a light fixture
and issues with on-lot sewage disposal systems. If you are
interested in attending such a workshop, please contact the
Slate Belt Council of Governments at (phone or fax) (610)
863-1726 or email
slatebeltcog@entermail.net.
The Slate Belt Council of Governments has organized a
regional Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) to
help serve the area in the event of a major emergency or
disaster. CERT trains citizens in basic emergency response
skills related to search and rescue, fire suppression, first
aid, traffic control, and other basic emergency skills. Once
trained, CERT members are provided with basic emergency
equipment and may, in some cases, be called upon to assist
emergency personnel in the event of a large emergency. By
becoming certified by CERT, you give emergency services an
important option to call upon in extraordinary
circumstances. Additionally, you will be better prepared to
aid loved ones and neighbors in the event of an emergency
when professional emergency assistance is not immediately
available. If you feel unprepared to deal with a fire in
your home, a medical emergency, or another crisis situation,
CERT can be a valuable resource for you.
We are arranging to set up a CERT training session on a
Monday evening in East Bangor Borough. If you are interested
in becoming certified or just want more information, call
the Slate Belt Council of Governments at (phone or fax)
(610) 863-1726 or email
slatebeltcog@entermail.net.
